Christopher Fowler: The real-life background of Bryant & May

“It’s not entirely made up.”

We lament the recent death of author Christopher Fowler, who wrote the witty occult-flavored murder mystery series Bryant & May. Continuing our celebration of his work, we’re sharing an author interview that he had with The Joined-Up Writing Podcast. In the video below, Fowler had lots to share about the Bryant & May universe he created, including the real life origins of the Peculiar Crimes Unit. The author also offered insight into his writing process and career.

Fowler told them, “People always go, ‘Oh that’s all made up isn’t it?’ And I go, ‘Well, actually, no, it’s not entirely made up.’ My dad was in in a unit when he was very young. Toward the end of the war, they recruited very young people to go into these experimental units. They did set up these these various units to look into kind of other ways of doing things.”
