Author Kalayna Price draws her ideas from the world around her, her studies into ancient mythologies, and her obsession with classic folklore. She is best known for her Alex Craft novels, an urban fantasy series starring a witch who solves crimes by speaking to the dead.
“On the world building side,” Price told The Qwillery, “I enjoy working in a world that is recognizable but with a magical overlay. On the plotting side, I like the endless possibilities available to work with: add some mystery, some romance, some horror, etc.—anything goes. The readers of this genre are very well read and very accepting of other genre aspects in their stories.”
Price tried writing her first novel when she was 12—but says it was the first of many false starts. As she explained to The Reading Cafe, she didn’t get serious about writing until she was 23. “Then I actually sat down and worked through the stumbling blocks that had always stopped me before and wrote my first real novel in just under three months.”
Price was also one of the authors in the anthology Kicking It, which features urban fantasy stories that prove when you’re fighting supernatural forces, it helps to keep your feet on the ground. The book also includes stories from Rachel Caine, Faith Hunter, Chloe Neill, and more.
