The original novella by Robert Louis Stevenson details the trials of a respected doctor whose repressed evil urges are manifested by an an alternate personality. Intrigued by the concept since his teens, the author worked through its implications in earlier writings.

The story made such an impact that the phrase “Jekyll and Hyde”—representing a striking dual nature - is understood by people who have never read the story. Literary critics have studied the work from a number of angles, considering it as a gothic novel, allegory, fable, detective story, Doppelgänger literature, and more.

In the year since its publication, the novella has been adapted, copied, spoofed, and otherwise borrowed hundreds of times in films, literature, comics, stage plays, and more.
