Complete Mothra: Giant Monster Movies

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

A kaiju that first appeared in the novel The Luminous Fairies and Mothra by Takehiko Fukunaga, the giant lepidopteran Mothra made her film debut in 1961's Mothra. One of Toho’s most popular monsters, Mothra is second only to Godzilla in her total number of film appearances.

Unlike other Toho monsters, Mothra is a largely heroic character—often depicted hatching offspring (in some cases, twins) when approaching death, a reference to numerous Indian religions. IGN ranked Mothra #3 on their list of “Top 10 Japanese Movie Monsters,” and Complex listed the character at #7 on its list of “The 15 Most Badass Kaiju Monsters of All Time.”
