Classic sitcom episodes where Herman Munster proved himself a sports master. Of sorts.

Over the course of its classic run, the horror comedy CBS sitcom The Munsters featured several episodes where Herman Munster was pressed to demonstrate his prowess (or lack thereof) in sports. At various times, he was a racer, a ball player, a bronco-buster, and more. Scroll down below are some examples…

RELATED:

The Drag-u-la

In the episode “Hot Rod Herman” (The Munsters Season 1, Episode 36), Herman is convinced by Eddie to compete in a drag-car race. When he loses the family hearse, Grandpa turns a coffin into a dragster for the event.

Herman Munster Tries Out for the Dodgers

In The Munsters episode “Herman the Rookie” (Season 1, Episode 29), Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager Leo Durocher guest stars as himself. When Herman takes Eddie to the park to teach him baseball, he hits the ball out of the park—and hits Durocher in the head, eight blocks away. The manager is sure that whoever hit the ball that far will solve his team’s need for a hard-hitting player.

A Round of Golf

In the episode “Country Club Munsters” (The Munsters Season 1, Episode 30), Herman Munster wins a free membership of an exclusive country club. But when the Munsters try to take advantage of the amenities, havoc ensues.

The Masked Marvel

In the episode “Herman the Great” (Season 1, Episode 8), Herman moonlights as a professional wrestler to save up money for Eddie’s college fund.

Scholarship Mix Up

In the episode “All-Star Munster” (Season 1, Episode 17), there’s an error with Marilyn’s college tuition. But when Herman goes to the college to speak with the dean, there’s a mix-up and Herman is signed to a basketball scholarship that belongs to someone else.

Bronco Buster

Once again, in “Bronco-Bustin’ Munster” (The Munsters Season 2, Episode 3), Eddie Munster thinks his pop is the greatest at everything in the world—and registers Herman for a bronco-busting contest at the rodeo.

BONUS: Herman Teaches Eddie Athletics

In the episode “Herman, Coach of the Year” (Season 2, Episode 5), Herman offers to help Eddie practice for the track team.

ABOUT THE MUNSTERS

In the pantheon of sitcom families, there are few (if any) as memorable as The Munsters. With 70 episodes of the horror comedy airing on the CBS network across two seasons (1964-1966), the show featured Herman Munster and Lily Munster (portrayed by Fred Gwynne and Yvonne De Carlo), Grandpa Munster (Al Lewis), Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick), and Marilyn Munster (first by Beverley Owen, then Pat Priest). Despite airing only two seasons, the show has continued to delight viewers through reruns and a series of reunions, revisits, and reboots.
