New Harry Potter TV Coming to HBO Max, Cartoon Network, TBS

Plans Include Interactive TV Quiz, New Adaptation of Original Books

Warner Bros. TV Group chairman Channing Dungey says show is still a “priority.”

The Harry Potter series—which began as seven fantasy novels by author J. K. Rowling—shares how a young wizard and his friends at a wizard school handle the threat of a dark wizard who intends to overthrow the Ministry of Magic, and rule over all wizards and Muggles (non-magical people). In the twenty years after actor Daniel Radcliffe first portrayed the boy wizard in the screen adaptation Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the franchise has exploded from books and movies to include a Broadway play, theme park rides, videogames, retail stores—and now an upcoming TV show.

January 2024 UPDATE:

Warner Bros. recently told Variety that the upcoming Harry Potter and/or Wizarding World TV series for the streaming channe; Max continues to be a “high priority.” They still plan to devote each season of the show to one book from the original print series. Warner Bros. TV Group chairman Channing Dungey told the magazine:

“We’re in conversations with a number of different writers to figure out who’s going to be the person to lead that franchise for us. The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those [casting] conversations. The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12.”

Previously reported:

The first film of the series came out on Nov. 16, 2001—and five nights of TV specials are planned to mark the anniversary on HBO Max, Cartoon Network, and TBS. A special will challenge Potter fans on their knowledge of the Wizarding World. The show will comprise four, one-hour challenges and viewers will be able to play along at home.

Meanwhile, a live-action Harry Potter’ TV series is in early development at HBO Max. While fans of the beloved film series feel this unnecessary, readers of the original books know there is so much more to the story. A multi-episode series would have more room to unpack the adaptation, giving the time for details (plus characters and entire subplots) that were left out of the films.

There would also be the opportunity to flesh out stories previously only alluded to, such as the adventures of the Marauders.
