Get to know Milestone Comics in new editions with Static, Hardware, Icon, more

“There wasn’t a company like Milestone before, and there hasn’t been one like Milestone since.”

Classic Milestone superheroes are available again in new omnibus collections—as well as a brand-new comic book.

Milestone Media—which gave us Milestone Comics and inspired the Static Shock cartoon show—was launched in 1993. The company was started by a team of African-American creatives, including comic book veterans like Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Derek T. Dingle, Michael Davis, and Christopher Priest.

The Milestone founders wanted to address how minorities were underrepresented in American comics. As part of their mission, they launched new characters like Static, Hardware, and Icon

“After all this time, there still aren’t enough Black superheroes,” Entertainment Weekly reported. “Milestone Media’s four-year run in the ’90s remains the benchmark for original Black crimefighters whose identities and backgrounds were central to their power, not coincidental.” [Source: The EW reading guide to Milestone’s classic Black superhero comics]

“There wasn’t one [company] like Milestone before, and there hasn’t been one like Milestone since,” comic book veteran Joseph Illidge told AIPT. “Hardware #1… I consider that one of the best number ones of a superhero comic ever in the North American space. It came out in 1993. We’re sitting here 33 years later, and it still slaps the same way.” [Source: A Milestone of modern comics magic: Joseph Illidge dives deep into 'The Dakota Incident']

Regarding the recent return of Milestone, Illidge also talked wth the Comics are Dope podcast:

“Comics, as far as I’m concerned, is the best storytelling medium that is. And part of the reason is because the synthesis… If you’re blessed, you are involved in a comic book in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And I truly feel that about [The Dakota Incident]. I feel like we all came together and we made something that was uniquely beyond the plan.” [Source: JOSEPH ILLIDGE Talks THE DAKOTA INCIDENT, 100k Challenge and What’s Next for Static]

The Dakota Incident #1

In The New History of the DC Universe, seeds were planted that inferred Milestone’s new continuity in the DC Universe. Was that planned from the beginning, or were both the Milestone and DC elements developed separately and put in conjunction with each other later?
